Matthew McPhillips is a New York City-based freelance arts writer, advisor, and curator.

His critical writing and reviews engage current developments in contemporary art globally, with a particular focus on installation art, while also covering painting, sculpture, video, and photography. His advising focuses on acquisitions of contemporary artwork across the primary and secondary market, leveraging relationships with artists and galleries worldwide. His curatorial interests lie in the poetics of contemporary expression, informed by a sustained engagement with art history, cinema, and literature.

Alongside his work, he also consults on a freelance basis with artist studios and estates.

He previously held positions at Westwood Gallery NYC, most recently as Associate Director, where he worked for over nine years with historic New York-based artists and estates. He also worked as a Program Assistant with Voices in Contemporary Art (VoCA), assisting with their VoCA Summit: “Six Years of Convening,” a one-day gathering of artists, art historians, conservators, curators, and educators at SFMoMA.
